MANUSCRIPT CHECKLIST
Prepare your Word manuscript for book formatting.
You do not need to design the finished book in Word. We need a clean document with a clear structure. Work on a copy of your manuscript so the original stays intact.
Check your Word file for freeNo account needed. Your file stays in your browser during the check.
Use Word styles to mark the structure.
Select each chapter title and choose Home → Styles → Heading 1. Making a heading larger or bold is not enough: the formatting process needs the actual heading style to recognise the chapter.
Use Heading 2 and Heading 3 for subheadings, and Normal for body text. Use the Title style for the book title. We create the final table of contents, so do not add an automatic Word table of contents or page-number fields to this source copy.
- Chapter title: Heading 1
- Subheading: Heading 2 or Heading 3
- Body text: Normal
- Book title: Title
Keep the writing and paragraph structure simple.
Accept or reject tracked changes, then remove comments from the copy you will submit. Proofread the text before ordering. We format your manuscript; we do not edit the wording.
Keep bold and italic where you want them. Use real paragraphs and simple, single-level lists. Avoid text boxes, columns and spacing built with repeated tabs or blank paragraphs. Print headers and page numbers will be made in the final PDF.
Place each image in its own paragraph.
The standard service accepts up to five PNG or JPEG images. Select each image in Word and choose the In Line with Text layout option. Put it in a paragraph without other text, rather than wrapping text around it.
Use the original high-quality image where possible. We check the placed resolution for print. Do not rely on a tiny screenshot enlarged to fill a page. Contact us first for illustrated books or images extending to the page edge.
Do not remove important content just to pass the check.
The fixed-price process stops when it finds tables, footnotes, endnotes, hyperlinks, formulas, Word fields, floating images, text boxes or nested lists. This prevents those elements from disappearing silently.
If any of these are essential to your book, ask us to assess the manuscript separately. Do not delete references or convert important tables into ordinary text merely to obtain a passing result. A different production route may be needed.
Save as .docx and run the free check.
Save the source copy as a Word .docx document, not .doc, PDF or an image. Check the complete manuscript, not just one chapter, before proceeding to payment.
The check runs inside your browser and does not upload the file. It checks structure and supported content; it is not a spelling check, plagiarism check or publishing approval. We also inspect the produced book files personally.
Common questions
What if the check finds no chapters?
Apply the Heading 1 style to each chapter title. A manually bold heading may look correct but is not identified as a chapter. Save the document and check it again.
Can I submit a document from another writing app?
You can try its Word .docx export. Exports can contain structures our service cannot safely convert. Run the complete file through the check first; ask us if it fails.
Should I already set Word to the final print size?
That is not necessary for our service. We create the 6 × 9-inch print interior separately. Confirm this final size with your printer before ordering.
More about chapter headings
Amazon’s Word guide also explains using Heading 1 for chapter titles. It covers features that our fixed-price service does not support, so use the limits on this page for a StyleMyBook order.
